Corrosion Control

Iron is harvested from the earth as an oxide. Iron oxide is the thermodynamically stable form of iron. Processing transforms iron oxide into the reduced form iron metal which is tempered with impurities to manufacture all grades of steel.

Steel is the work horse of industry. Formed into pipes and vessels of all shapes and sizes, steel is the substrate for fluid conveyance in oil and gas exploration, petroleum refineries, chemical plants, electricity generating facilities and in the process industries. Cast iron and steel are engineering materials that are designed into turbines and engines. The world of manufacturing turns steel into vehicles and individually engineered components. The role in construction for steel is to take the stresses and strains within a structure, be it a suspension bridge or a sky-scraper.

No matter what the end use, steel has a key characteristic that is the ability to react with oxygen and moisture in the air at ambient temperature to re-form iron oxide – to form rust. Steel in all its uses will undergo the process of corrosion to form rust. By forming rust the steel loses all of its key properties and eventually the steel has to be replaced at great cost.

Protecting steel from corrosion is a £multi-billion global industry. Cortec Corporation (USA) is known across industry sectors around the world for corrosion control products and processes that delay the onset of corrosion and control the rate of corrosion. The environmental benefits of corrosion control to society are enormous as are the short and long term economic rewards to the customer. Cortec’s products have high efficacy, are engineered to support the environment and can be used to benefit every situation. These products take solutions to a superior level of performance and reliability.

The operational areas where we offer solutions are, for example:

Energy Generation Oil and Gas Defence Manufacturing Industry Construction
HRSG & Boiler protection during shut-down Corrosion under insulation Cleaning and protection of assets for immediate use: In process corrosion protection Migratory Corrosion Inhibitors for new build
Air Compressor cleaning and protection Protection of pipe lines for Gas conveyance Storage of aeroplanes, helicopters and weapons Finished product shipping especially for export Migratory Corrosion Inhibitors for refurbishment:car park decks,pre-fab buildings

Lake’s role in the corrosion control process is to:

  • Work with the client to understand the root cause
  • Carry out on-site surveys and prepare inspection reports
  • Propose workable solutions including the interactions between process and product
  • Create Standard Operating Procedures
  • Carry out or enable and monitor implementation
  • Provide corrosion control training with on site consultation
  • Review progress and propose improvements

Be aware that Lake brings new solutions to unsuccessful experiences in corrosion control. Our products and processes are today protecting power stations, bridges, car parks and buildings or the train, car or lorry you drive. To find out more please contact us.

Water Treatment and the Environment

Lake partners with companies to provide trusted solutions to water treatment problems. In Polymer recycling operations, for example, our engineers work with the client to identify the process, additives and equipment required to comply with local waste water quality standards. We provide this service across Europe.

The issue of FOG (Fat, Oil and Grease) in the effluent from commercial restaurants and industrial sites is approached by adding a bacteriological solution to existing mechanical separation techniques. These tried and tested bacteriological solutions are safe and efficacious. Lake analyses the waste stream and proposes inspection schedules and training for client personnel to solve the problems.

Odours associated with industrial (dairy and food processing) or household environments can be easily eliminated by using the correct biological products. Lake works with industrial waste service providers and formulators of cleaning agents to develop cost effective and workable solutions. To find out more please contact us.
